Good fun to use. An undergraduate senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and currently being maintained by some of those who originally worked on it. Intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. See paint.net here.
Pixia http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/ The original version created and developed by the author, Isao Maruoka. Input by many fans now makes this software unique - very different from other tools. Spectacularly so.
Irfanview Surprisingly effective software for images. You have to see it to believe it. http://www.irfanview.com/
Skype. Doesn't everyone know about Skype by now? A few years back it seemed one of those too good to be true things but it turns out to be a truly a good deal. It really has left more money in my pocket. Link to Skype
